My Experience
Living in Nicaragua has led me to believe that criminal activity is more complicated than we are often led to believe. In movies, criminals always seem evil and act without the normal, everyday personal's motivation. However, my observations of gang members have led me to believe that their behaviors, just like the average persons', are based on "rational" and "logical" motivation.
I want to clarify that I do not by any means wish to justify the action of gangs. Illicit behavior is illegal and cannot go unpunished; but I do think it is important to understand the actions of all people, both delinquent and law abiding. I believe that the key to improving circumstances is understanding the situation, people, and emotions involved. I hope that this site will encourage you to look at situations from multiple perspectives, not necessarily accepting other scenarios as correct, but attempting to understand the reasoning behind them. The ultimate goal should always be rehabilitation and for this to happen, first we need to find the core issue.
